11/2/2004 Machine malfunction WA Snohomish County. Voters in at least four polling precincts in Snohomish County said

they have encountered problems with the Sequoia electronic voting machines. When they touched the screen to vote for a candidate,

an indicator showed they had selected the opposing candidate. It took at least four attempts before the indicator showed the correct candidate.

other candidate instead. She corrected both problems, but wanted to report the machines.

results; showed a vote for bush. repeated at least 3 times before results reflected kerry vote. told poll worker who responded that it had been a

 common occurrence already that morning.

 her card into voting machine, and when the ballot came up, boxes were already checked. The machine was most likely the Sequoia AVC Edge, based

 on machines in use in Snohomish County, and on the description of the manner of use. The boxes checked were not along straight party lines. She brought

it to the attention of one of the poll workers who said he would "recalibrate" the machine. She managed to uncheck the boxes, and confirmed that she voted

for the candidates of her choice.

husband said when they pulled up their electronic ballots, Bush was already checked. When they tried to switch it to vote for Kerry, had very difficult

 time unchecking the Bush box. Ultimately were successful.

Voter registered at DMV approx. 9 months to one year ago after moving to WA from CA, but never received a registration card. Voter went to proper polling place today, but was told he is not on registration list. Voter was given provisional ballot, which he voted. Voter's wife called number on back of her registration card, and was told voter was not registered in WA. Voter was told his provisional ballot would not be counted. Voter is very upset, especially because he is a veteran, and is still serving in the National Guard.

Caller's son left him a message sometime in the afternoon (call came in at 3:20) that he had been turned away from the poll because school was in session. Son had to go to work and may now be unable to vote. The caller had voted at this polling location that morning. Son lives with the father and is registered at the same address.
