Machine problem

fairgrounds, Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, New Mexico

voter had problems with touch-screen machine. when she selected the candidate for President that she was voting for, the other candidate's name lit up; the same thing happened for several of the individual races -- when she chose the candidate from one party, the candidate's name from the other party lit up. when she checked it at the end, all the correct candidates were selected, so it appears that her ballot was correct, but she didn't understand why the other candidates' names were lighting up while she was filling out her ballot. this call was from a MoveOn.org activist in TX who received this information from a caller in NM and wanted to report it.

Absentee-ballot related problem; Identification-related problem

Santa Fe, Santa Fe County, New Mexico

Caller moved to NM for school, was aware of confusion over whether need to show ID if register by mail, so he registered in person at county clerk office and requested an absentee ballot. When he received absentee ballot, also received a cover letter saying he had registered by mail and need to show ID. He went to county clerk office to turn in ballot and complained that he had registered in person. Clerk pulled card and it was marked that he had registered by mail. Clerk received his absentee ballot and said it would be counted, but caller was concerned that records are not being properly kept and asking for ID may intimidate/confuse minority voters.
