035052 11/02/04, 9:36 AM PST Voter Intimidation; Machine problem Mitchell School; 56th and Kingsessing Avenue , Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania Woman resident in nursing home. Minute residents stepped out of the car, we were accosted by people who were telling us how to vote. They were all Democrats. Reported that the Democratic operatives were standing "right outside the door" to the school serving as the pollsite. The group that went to the polls reported that some machines were lit up with votes already when they came in (apparently because the previous voter had not pushed the VOTE button to finalize their votes); some in the group were able to successfully insist that poll workers reset the machine before they voted. In at least one case, poll workers assumed that the votes already displayed on the machine (apparently left over from the previous voter) were what this voter intended, pressed VOTE for them, and did not allow them to subsequentl y cast their own vote. On later visits, the group knew to be more assertive about demanding machine resets, which seems to have solved the problem. Machine problem

Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania

Voter cast ballot and when he exited the site he explained how he voted. First he hit the top button used to vote a straight party ticket. After he hit individual candidate buttons for candidates in the same party - this had the effect os undoing his straight ticket selection and he didn't cast a vote for some candidates. He then hit a red button intended only for election workers - we're fairly sure his vote was then made ineffective.
