Voter Intimidation

Dirty Tricks

Raleigh, Wake Co. County, North Carolina

First time voter, registered as a democrat. Got voter registration card in April, which listed her polling place. Verified her polling place at mypollingplace.com, and it was the same as what was on the card. Meantime, she gets a phone call from "Republicans for Bush". They left a voice recording, which she played for me. Sounds like the name was Nancy Mortiker (sp?) calling for Republicans for Bush. Messager told her where polling place was, driving directions, but was a different polling place from what voter card and mypollingplace states. Morehead Planetarium, Orange County, Cumberland County, North Carolina

Voter waited in line for 30 minutes; told (by Jay Weather, poll worker) that her absentee ballot had to be notarized and that she should leave the poll place to find someone to notarize the ballot; Voter had been attempting to use North Carolina's one stop voting program, which allows her to vote anywhere in the state - poll worker told her that she could only vote in her county; poll worker then told her not to worry about not voting

Voter Intimidation; Problem based on student status

Not letting out of state univ. students vote

Buncombe County, North Carolina

Ellen called on behalf of her son. He and some friends at college in Buncombe COunty, were sent letters (went to all out of state students who had registered in NC) stating that they could not vote unless they produced a bank statement, paycheck etc with address in Buncombe County. He's a student and doesn't have these things. Has picture ID to present as first time student. I told her out of state student are allowed to vote in states where they are resident for school

Burke County. Unilect Patriot touchscreen machines register presidential undervotes in excess of 10% -- 1 in 10 people didn't vote for president. The machine is the same as the one that lost 4,400 votes in Carteret County, but officials think it was the screen/ballot design rather than a malfunction that caused the high undervote rate.  (apparently the majority were straight party voters who did not realise that voting straight party did not include the vote for President).  http://www.votersunite.org/article.asp?id=4645

Voting a straight party ticket DOES NOT include a vote for president.    http://www.wwaytv3.com/Global/story.asp?S=2477730

Gaston County. The three-member Board of Elections discovered about 75 new votes in each contested race during the recount Tuesday. They counted the ballots again Wednesday and confirmed the additional votes. All said they could not explain the change. Unknown glitches appear to be responsible.         http://www.votersunite.org/article.asp?id=3896

Gaston County. The number of recorded votes and voters don't match in more than half of the precincts. The discrepancies raise the possibility that some people could have voted twice, while others might have cast ballots that were not counted. Some ballots also might not have been recorded because people pulled their voting cards too quickly from the voting machine. The Gaston Board of Elections said it was concerned by the findings     http://www.votersunite.org/article.asp?id=3894

The county pays a technician from Diebold to operate its systems on Election Day. That person was in charge of transferring early votes from electronic storage to the counting computer. Diebold believes the transmission was interrupted, said spokesman David Bear    http://www.votersunite.org/article.asp?id=3861

In Guilford County, ES&S early voting machines had capacity problems, which affected anywhere from 6,000 to 20,000 ballots.  The totals were so large, the tabulation computer threw some numbers away. Retallying changed two outcomes and gave an additional 22000 votes to Kerry

http://www.votersunite.org/article.asp?id=3719

ES&S explained that the Unity 2.2 tally software reached 32,767 (32K) and began subtracting from the totals (same as in Broward County). ES&S had known about the problem but not told its customers

Carteret County. More than 4,500 votes irretrievably lost in coastal Carteret County could trigger a new statewide election if the official margin of victory in two Council of State races is close enough, state election officials said Monday

Craven County. Problems with Electronic Systems and Software Inc. iVotronic voting machines surfaced in one-stop early voting, requiring all screens to be replaced.  The original vote count showed Republican challenger defeating the encumbent Democrat, but investigation showed that the margin was due to numerous computer “glitches”.

Craven County. "A master terminal at the Vanceboro one-stop voting site did not require a password and resulted in an incorrect total in the presidential returns there." ES&S again

Company representatives were already aware of the election night glitch that resulted in 11,283 more votes for president than the 40,534 people first thought to have voted in the county.   http://www.votersunite.org/article.asp?id=3753

Phantom votes/machine malfunction   Mecklenburg County. Before the election, the county election office said 102,109 people voted early or returned valid absentee ballots. Unofficial results from election night showed 106,064 of those votes.  http://www.votersunite.org/article.asp?id=3697

Montana            Optical scan systems have “glitches” too

Flathead County. Errors in the programming for the optical scan tabulation system. Two precincts showed no opposition to I-147 (which would reverse the ban on using cyanide in mining). Next precinct scanned, same result. Then it got worse. New returns show a precinct voted well beyond the number of registered voters               http://www.votersunite.org/article.asp?id=3994
