Polling place inquiry |
|
Caller was called and a message left on her answering machine to
come to this polling place. This is far from her home. Inside the polling
place she was told (apparently rightly so) that she was at the wrong place.
She was very upset and didn't want to find out where the right place was. She
didn't know who left the message and told her to come here. [P] |

Voter Intimidation; Other ballot-related problem; Other polling
place problem |
Price Memorial |
Voter was challenged; her name did not appear on the rolls. She
was told at first she could take a provisional ballot, which she refused.
Republican challenger was intimidating; took her name and put it on his list.
She was very upset. Poll workers actually told her she could vote on a
regular ballot but she was so upset by the challenge she was afraid to vote;
was afraid her vote would not count. Voter had been registered but recently
changed her address to this precinct. She still owns the house at her old
address and decided to vote at the precinct for her old address. When she
informed the poll workers of her intention, the republican challenger made a
call that she believed was too the challenger at her old polling place so she
felt she would be challenged if she went there. EP volunteer attempted to
convince her to file a provisional ballot at this precinct (which is where she
lives now) but she was distrustful that it would count. We took her cell
phone number and will follow up with her later. (Note: description on the
paper form is much longer - I have summarized it - Jan Steckel

Caller had assisted several people in registering and obtaining
absentee ballots. One of them registered, and the caller verified the
registration with the board of elections in September. She has a note of the
date. The young man was told that he was not on the rolls, and was sent to a
series of three different polling places, even though he asked for a
provisional ballot. Ultimately gave up and did not vote. |

1. 2 polling districts, one small cramped voting area; random
lines, so that many wasted time in wrong line, had to start over; 2. poll workers unwilling to read names of streets in each
district so voters know where to go; 3. machine in
which "thank you for your vote" didn't pop up; 4. workers unwilling
to call Board of Elections--merely giving provisional ballot |

17 voters cast provisional ballots because they were not on the
rolls. They all had proper ID and proof of residence in the precincts. Their
ballots whould have been converted to regular
ballots but were not because: A) The poll officials did not have the
appropriate forms and B) there was no mechanism for calling the Board of
Elections and getting voter numbers for them. |
